Protesters went to occupy the road leading to Oi nuclear power plant in the afternoon of June 30, the day before the scheduled restart of Oi reactor #3, with the intention to keep the Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) workers from reaching the plant.
They staged an all night protest. The protest lasted over 30 hours, sometimes in the rain, against a wall of riot police trying to disperse the crowd. People from all age groups and backgrounds chanted "Saikado hantai!" and "We oppose the restart!" to the rhythm of the drums. Some formed a human wall against the row of riot police to keep them from moving in.
Later when the riot police began pushing into the human wall to break it, people began chanting, "Bouryoku hantai!" or "We oppose violence!" and kept their arms in the hold-up position so as not to touch riot officers inadvertently and risk an arrest for obstruction of officers’ duties.
This video is from about 3 hours before the scheduled 9pm restart on July 1, 2012.
